Building New Lives in America introduces immigration and migration in the United
States by allowing the students to investigate movement toward Oregon
(1840-1850), New York
City (1880-1920), Chicago (1890-1940), and present day patterns of immigration.
Upon
completion of instruction the students will have:
1.
Identified the difference between immigration and migration and why each
occurs.
2. Constructed a landform map and travel map of the Oregon Trail route.
3.
Created mathematical story problems that settlers may have faced on the
Oregon Trail.
4. Collected information using an Internet resource.
5.
Designed a welcome symbol and t-shirt that may have been made at the Triangle Shirtwaist
Company.
6.
Participated in virtual tours of the Ellis Island and the Triangle
Shirtwaist Company fire.
7.
Collected a family history through an interview process learned in
Language Arts.
8. Researched why immigrants move to the United States today.
9. Participated in class discussion, peer evaluation, and presentation.
